A historic way between Tournai, Bouvines and Seclin

The origins of this way date back in the third century with Saint Piat and the legend that surrounds it. This Christian martyr was sent to Tournai to evangelize the peoples of northern Gaule. Martyred at Tournai - a Roman soldier would have cut the top of his skull - he later joined Seclin on foot to be buried.

Seclin has long been the place of pilgrimage the most frequented of the diocese of Tournai, processions starting regularly to discovery the presumed tomb of Saint Piat.

 

In addition to this origin, this itinerary is also the one of a true invasion corridor, a place holder of a rich history.

In turn, the communes have been at the heart of regional historical events such as the famous Battle of Bouvines which took place in July 1214. First major battle of European dimension which marks for France the birth of the idea of ​​nation and homeland.

Unlike other European battlefields, the site is perfectly preserved. The plain of the Battle of Bovines is a place amazingly preserved and is in progress of classification under the  unique remarkable and historic landscapes in a cross border area.

Today, this historic way crosses well-preserved landscapes representative of agricultural activities which have made the ancestral wealth of this country.

The walkers who use the way discover a landscape that has changed only partially for centuries, the landscape that fighters have seen 800 years ago. Its layout is also visible on maps and aerial photographs.

 

 

 

 

 

This rural road is accessible to hikers (hiking, horseback riding, cycling).
